Caveat User

As of 9/18/2009, Multidoc is beta software. For a Textpattern plugin it is large and fairly complicated, and testing thus far has been limited. Entering invalid data in the Multidoc custom field is likely to cause unexpected results. Usually Multidoc will fail quietly, simply shutting down its navigation tags and allowing the page to load otherwise normally. However, during development and testing there were a variety of interesting errors, including fatal errors that prevented pages from loading at all, and while I think I have fixed all of these, I can’t be sure.

Multidoc uses several recursive functions to pack up and spit out multi-tiered arrays. While I don’t think you can mis-enter data such that you take your site into a recursive tailspin, you might just surprise me. If you are on shared web hosting your provider is not going to like you if you start swallowing CPU cycles as fast as they can feed them to you.

All of which is to say, test Multidoc in a development environment before deploying it on a live site. Please contact me if you discover serious errors, even if they are caused by mis-entering data in the Multidoc field.

For the time being, it is best to restrict Multidoc administration (i.e., entering data in the “Multidoc” custom field) to yourself or to well-trained users. Multidoc is quite easy to use correctly, but mistakes will happen.

For certain types of data entry errors, Multidoc will display an error message to help you figure out where the problem is. Read more about this in the Support page.
